At New Abirem in the Eastern Region, on Sunday, October 13, the Akyem Kotoku Environmental Task Force arrested 20 suspected unlicensed miners, including two Chinese nationals.
The accused were found actively involved in illegal mining operations in the Birim North District, close to the Roman Missionary House.
The task force confiscated two pumping machines, three excavators, and other mining equipment during the operation.
Currently, all 20 suspects are being held by the police while they await arraignment in court.
Following tensions in the region, where local youths had resisted the transfer of excavators into the village on Saturday by confronting the District Chief Executive (DCE) and police, the arrests were made.
