The Electoral Commission (EC) expressed serious concerns about how misinformation and fake news can affect the polls on December 7.
The EC’s Director of Training, Dr. Serebour Quaicoo, emphasized the growing danger of disinformation in a media interview on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.
“Misinformation poses a real threat to Election 2024,” he warned, noting the risks of unverified reports spreading rapidly on social and traditional media. “Both the traditional and social media at times are in a hurry to put forward information without checking authenticity,” Dr. Quaicoo explained, noting that deceptive videos unrelated to Ghana’s election could emerge to mislead the public.
The EC has stepped up efforts to strengthen its communication channels in response to these threats, with the goal of providing accurate and verified election-related updates as quickly as possible.
Dr. Quaicoo cautioned voters against sharing unverified content and advised them to rely on reliable sources for election-related information.
“We’re taking steps to ensure that accurate information reaches the public swiftly,” he assured, emphasising the importance of collaboration among the EC, media outlets, and the public to safeguard the election’s integrity.
The EC’s call to action emphasizes how everyone involved has a shared obligation to stop the spread of false information.
“A coordinated effort between the EC, the media, and the public is essential to preserving a peaceful and credible election,” Dr. Quaicoo stated.
The EC advised people to report questionable content and to double-check information before spreading it.
