The Electoral Commission’s (EC) chairperson, Jean Mensa, has made it clear that the Commission has no authority over the use of force or any other election-related security measures.
Her comments come after the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) announced that military personnel would be sent to specific areas to ensure election security.
No military officers would be situated at polling places, the GAF stressed.
During a press conference on December 7, Madam Mensa reaffirmed the EC’s non-participation in security planning, saying,”“In terms of security, we have no hand in it and we do not make security arrangements.”
The purpose of the clarification is to allay worries and guarantee that the general public is aware of the different functions that the EC and security services play during the election process.
