The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has once again offered himself as the man who can turn around Ghana’s struggling economy by promising drastic changes and all-encompassing economic revitalization in the event that he wins the general election on December 7.
During his three-day campaign trip in the Upper West Region, Mahama spoke to receptive crowds in Nadowli and Wichaw. He focused particularly on the rising dejection among the country’s youth and offered a message of hope, resiliency, and rejuvenation.
He characterized the state of the economy as terrible and blamed the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for eight years of egregious economic mismanagement.
Mahama claims that the NPP’s policies have made many Ghanaians’ financial problems worse, especially for the country’s youth, who he claims have been most negatively impacted by increased unemployment, stagnating earnings, and a lack of economic possibilities.
In his remarks, Mahama presented a bleak image of the economy’s current situation, pointing to high rates of inflation, unmanageable debt, and a depreciating currency, all of which he claimed had fueled the populace’s general dissatisfaction and despair.
“NDC is going to come and fix the economy. So I know a lot of young people are losing hope. A lot of young people say, look, we don’t see any future in this country. And I can understand you. After what has happened these last 8 years, you are justified to lose hope in your country.
“But I stand here as the former president of Ghana and the incoming president of Ghana to appeal to all the young people of this country. You are my children because many of you are the same ages as my sons, and I appeal to you not to lose hope in this country. This country will rise up again.”
