The National Tenants Union of Ghana is calling for the complete abolition of the Rent Control Department, advocating instead for the establishment of an independent Rent Authority.
This proposed authority would operate autonomously as a private body, free from government interference in order to better address the needs of tenants and landlords.
The General Secretary of the National Tenants Union of Ghana, Mr. Fredrick Opoku emphasized the urgent need for reform, arguing that the current structure hampers the effectiveness of rent management in the country.
He pointed out that, according to the rent Act, the President has the authority to appoint Rent Commissioners but it has never happened before in Ghana.
According to him, the existing system places these commissioners under the oversight of the Minister of Works and Housing, which he claims restricts the department from performing effectively.
“The current arrangement creates a conflict of interest,” Opoku stated. “Rent Commissioners should be appointed and empowered to act independently, ensuring fair and transparent practices in the rental market.
The government’s involvement has led to inefficiencies and has stifled the true potential of the Rent Control Department.”
Opoku’s remarks come in the wake of growing concerns among tenants regarding rising rental prices and inadequate housing conditions.
He urged the government to take immediate action to establish a Rent Authority that can operate with the autonomy necessary to protect the rights of tenants and ensure equitable treatment for all parties involved.
