A formal petition has been filed against Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, by the Coalition for Youth Development in Okyeman for allegedly making “derogatory” remarks about the late Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah, a pivotal player in Ghana’s fight for independence.
The group claims that Dr. J.B. Danquah was referred to by Tamale Central MP Murtala Mohammed as a “traitor” and a “CIA operative” during parliamentary proceedings on February 4, 2025. They argued that such comments are not only offensive but also disrespectful to the legacy of a man who played a pivotal role in shaping Ghana’s history.
Akomaning Yeboah, the group’s convenor, urged the Speaker to act immediately by ordering the MP to take back his remarks and formally apologize on the Parliamentary floor in their petition.
They are also calling for the comments to be removed from the official parliamentary records, highlighting the fact that such historical distortions damage national cohesion and desecrate Dr. Danquah’s memory.
Ebenezer Djietror, the Clerk to Parliament, acknowledged receipt of the petition and promised that the Speaker would take the necessary action in due course.
