Government has announced plans to reintroduce road tolls using modern technology as part of its strategy to generate revenue for infrastructure development.
The announcement was made during the presentation of the 2025 budget to Parliament by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson. According to him, the new toll system will be powered by technology to improve revenue collection, efficiency, and transparency.
The action was taken after road tolls were stopped in 2022, which drastically cut into government revenue for road development and upkeep. Even after the suspension, the government has been forced to reevaluate the policy due to the growing demand for improved roads and infrastructure.
Dr. Forson emphasized in his presentation that the “Big Push Programme,” a government program centered on significant infrastructure investment, will include the reintroduction of tolls.
Digital payment solutions will be used by the new system to do away with cash transactions, cut down on delays, and stop revenue leaks.
