In a concerted effort to combat money laundering and terrorism financing, the Intergovernmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) is holding a series of pivotal events in Dakar, Senegal, over the next 48 hours. This initiative underscores the organization’s commitment to fortifying the economic and financial integrity of its 17 member states.
Beginning on June 13, the focus will be on the Annual Session of ECOWAS Member States Ambassadors and technical and financial partners. This session will feature the presentation of the GIABA Annual Report 2023, providing critical insights into the region’s progress and ongoing challenges in the fight against financial crimes. The presentation will be followed by a World Press Conference, engaging media representatives from across the 15 ECOWAS Member States.
On June 14, attention will shift to an intensive training program for approximately 40 journalists. The training will address key topics, including the media’s role in raising awareness and preventing financial crimes, the vulnerabilities associated with corruption and tax fraud, and the significance of transparency in beneficial ownership within the AML/CFT framework.
These events aim to enhance collaboration between GIABA, diplomatic representatives, national authorities, and the media, promoting a holistic approach to anti-money laundering (AML) and combating the financing of terrorism (CFT) in West Africa. By equipping media professionals with comprehensive knowledge and tools, GIABA hopes to amplify public awareness and encourage the adoption of best practices for maintaining a healthy and secure economic environment.
The gathering in Dakar not only reflects GIABA and ECOWAS’s steadfast dedication to safeguarding financial systems but also highlights their broader goal of fostering peace and sustainable development in the region. This year’s activities are built on previous sessions, including the notable December 2023 meeting in Dakar, reinforcing the institution’s strategic commitment to communication and stakeholder engagement.
Participants will include representatives from line ministries, national stakeholders, ambassadors from ECOWAS Member States, accredited states to Senegal, technical and financial partners, civil society, and media leaders from the 15 Member States. This diverse assembly aims to foster dialogue and cooperation, ensuring a united front against the threats posed by money laundering and terrorism financing.
