The Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has charged the National Peace Council , Religious Bodies, Chieftaincy Institution and Civil society Organisations to engage with key institutions that must play critical roles to curb inappropriate use of certain languages.
He said as the country prepares for the general elections, it is important to be weary of languages that may cause tension, rather he cautioned the media and politicians to sacrosanct in their reportage and message to promote peace before, during and after the elections.
The Minister was speaking at the Launch of the peace crusade tour organised by the National Peace Council on Sunday, 30th June 2024 in Koforidua.
He urged them to let the conversation that has started not end up into a talk shop rather they should walk the talk. He appealed to the Chiefs and religious leaders to use their platforms to also sensitize their people and promote peace.
The Chairman for the occasion, who is the President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II noted that per the global peace index, Ghana was ranked twenty-fifth(25th) country for peace whereas in Africa Ghana was ranked fourth (4th).
He called on all Ghanaians to abhor hooliganism and appealed to the National Peace Council to speak to the youth so they would not be used as agents of disruption.
For his part, the Executive Secretary Mr George Amoh outlined the programmes that the project seeks to undertake to ensure a free and fair elections. He said the Council has started monitoring the language on the media airwaves and will be monitoring election related conducts.
