Vice President Dr. Bawumia and his spouse Hajia Samira Bawumia paid their condolences to the family of their deceased bodyguard, Fuseini Mumuni, during a solemn visit.
On Sunday, January 14, 2024, the couple attended a Janazah (funeral) prayer with the bereaved family before being buried at the Madina Muslim Cemetery.
Leading government officials, including Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, Sammi Awuku, and Akosua Frema Osei Opare, the Chief of Staff, escorted them to the deceased’s family home in Nima.
Expressing their profound sympathy, Vice President Bawumia and Hajia Samira Bawumia offered sincere condolences to the bereaved family.
The tragic incident occurred near Nobewam, along the Kumasi-Accra highway, as confirmed by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS). Upon receiving the distress call, the Konongo-Odumasi Fire Station swiftly dispatched a team to the scene.
Eight people were injured in the crash, including the second lady, Samira Bawumia, according to preliminary investigations carried out by the GNFS. The GNFS rescue team, under the direction of STNO II Odjer Jonathan, arrived at the crash site at about 1:12 pm.
There, they found evidence of an accident involving a Mercedes Benz C180 (NR-1977-18), a Toyota Land Cruiser (GC-9094-21), a Toyota Land Cruiser (VR-2105-15), and a Benz Sprinter bus (GE-7256-14). Fortunately, four victims had already been rescued by bystanders and were being taken straight to the hospital to receive emergency care.
While the backs of the Toyota Land Cruisers (GC-9094-21) and (VR-2105-15) sustained partial damage, the Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus and the Mercedes Benz C180 car sustained significant damage to their engine compartments and widows.
No information has yet been released regarding the precise type and extent of the victims’ injuries.
The police are still looking for more information to piece together the events that led up to the tragic accident as part of their ongoing investigation into what caused the crash.
While the country grieves the loss of the bodyguard, Vice President Bawumia and the second lady are determined to offer their condolences and support to the bereaved family during this difficult time.
