Gov’t suspends L.I. on MPs’ use of sirens and exemptions from speed limits

Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, has officially withdrawn the disputed Legislative Instrument (L.I.) on behalf of the Minister of Transport.

This L.I to provide Members of Parliament (MPs) the right to employ sirens and be exempt from speed limits when executing their official duties.

The proposed modification to the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180) drew strong public criticism and resistance from a variety of sources, including the Minority Caucus in Parliament.

Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah announced the withdrawal in a formal statement on Parliament’s floor, addressing public and stakeholder concerns.

“Mr Speaker, I rise to move that the Road Traffic Regulation Amendment 2024, which was laid on Friday, June 14, 2024, be withdrawn. Mr. Speaker, this has become necessary based on extensive engagement with leadership. Therefore, it is so withdrawn,” he stated.

The Minority Caucus, led by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, had been outspoken in its opposition to the L.I., urging members to vote against it and demanding its immediate removal.
