Kobina Tahir Hammond, the Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, has filed a new petition with the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Vetting Committee, requesting the dismissal of all three candidates in the party’s parliamentary primary.
This action follows the dismissal of Hammond’s first petition, filed on January 2, 2024, to the Ashanti Regional Vetting Committee, asking for the disqualification of Mr. Sammy Binfoh Darkwa, his main opponent.
Both candidates were given the go-ahead to launch their primary campaigns by the vetting committee, which was chaired by Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako and NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye.
Citing his displeasure with the judgment made by the regional committee, Mr. Hammond has taken the matter to the National Vetting Committee, expressing his disagreement with the conclusion.
Sammy Binfoh Darkwa, the Managing Director of the Ghana Publishing Company, is among Mr. Hammond’s opponents who he claims are ineligible to compete in the parliamentary primaries according to the petition, which cites violations of Articles 12(4) and (7) of the party constitution.
Based on the accusations he has made against his rivals—that they are not NPP members and have not made enough contributions to the constituency’s advancement—Mr. Hammond is pleading with the National Vetting Committee to disqualify them.
Meanwhile, candidates are working more to interact with delegates in the run-up to the January 27 primaries, which is gaining pace in the campaign.
