The government intends to reinstate tolls on roads starting 2025.
This statement was given on Tuesday, July 23, by Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam at the mid-year fiscal policy review for 2024 presentation in Parliament.
Former Roads and Highways Minister Kwasi Amoako-Atta ordered the end of toll collecting at various toll booths around the nation on November 18, 2021.
This decision came after former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta declared that road tolls will no longer exist during the budget presentation for 2022.
Nevertheless, the government has since changed its mind and approved the creation of a framework for the 2025 reinstatement of road and bridge tolls.
“Mr. Speaker, Cabinet has also granted approval for the disbursement of an additional 1.5 billion Ghana Cedis to settle outstanding claims relating to financial management companies and the establishment of a framework for the re-introduction of Road and Bridge Tolls in 2025,” Dr. Amin Adam stated.
He added that the government had given its approval for the Fiscal Responsibility Act to be amended in order to restore the numeric threshold that had been suspended in 2020, as well as for the integrated property tax system to go into effect.
