Voter register not yet finalized – EC

The voter list for the general election of 2024 is still provisional and has not been finalized, as stated by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Dr. Bossman Asare, the EC’s Deputy Chairman in charge of Corporate Services, said “The voter register in its current state is provisional and the exhibition exercise is meant to correct all errors before it is finalized for the elections.”

The exhibition exercise, according to Dr. Asare, is intended to make corrections to the provisional voter register in order to strengthen and authenticate it for the general election in 2024.“After the exhibition exercise, the voter register will be accurate and credible, and this will result in the final register which will be used for the elections.”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has put pressure on the EC to make the voter registration public, but Dr. Asare has given assurances that the commission is operating legally. “Per regulation 22 of CI91 as amended by CI126, the commission is required to give the provisional register to the political parties not later than three months from the end of the registration period.”

Dr. Asare refuted assertions that copies of the register had not been given to political parties by the EC.“We wish to state that the external drives containing the provisional voter register are ready for pickup. However, we can state on record that the NDC has collected its external drive which contains the provisional voter register.”

During the exhibition exercise, registered voters are urged by the EC to verify their information.“The purpose of the exhibition exercise is to allow registered voters to verify their details, that is name, age, sex, polling station, and photograph as captured during the registration exercise and make requests for amendments, changes, or insertions where necessary to their details in the voter’s register.”

The EC is dedicated to holding an election that is transparent and believable, Dr. Asare underscored.

“We are working hard to ensure that the voter register is accurate and reliable for the 2024 general election.” The exhibition exercise is scheduled to take place on August 20.
