I haven’t deserted my job, I remain committed to my duties – NHIA Boss

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Da Costa Aboagye, has thrown cold water on media reports that he has abandoned his job and duties to travel abroad.

National newspaper, Day Break daily on Thursday, August 29, published that Da Costa Aboagye’s frequent absences from the nation were impeding the health sector’s ability to execute important management choices.

However, the NHIA boss has stated categorically that all his travels adhere closely to the required protocols.

He emphasized that the goal of his foreign engagements is to draw investment to Ghana’s health sector, bringing attention to the ‘Preventive Promotive Approach’ that the NHIA is using to combat noncommunicable illnesses.

“As CEO, I cannot just wake up and say that I’m going some[where]; you have to follow due process,” Dr. Da Costa Aboagye stated.

“I’m attracting international investment into the country by the presentations I’m doing, so it cannot be right that I have just on my own just said I’m going somewhere or this, but the good work that we are doing with Ghana has generated international attention,” he told Asaase Radio.

Also, Dr. Da Costa Aboagye said because he is the chair of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), his duties transcend national boundaries.

The NHIA CEO emphasized that the ongoing monkeypox (mpox) outbreak necessitates him continuing to be actively present internationally as part of his duties.

“I chair the African CDC Board for Disease Control. Now there is monkeypox, so my work actually transcends over borders… there is monkeypox outbreak, so I cannot abandon my work.”
