AMA joins forces with UNOSD to end textile waste pollution

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has allied with the United Nations Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD) to address the growing challenge of textile waste pollution in the city.

The partnership was initiated when a delegation from UNOSD, comprising Mr. Chun Kyoo Park, Ms. Emily Carroll, and Ms. Chaela Shin, called on the Mayor of Accra, Hon Elizabeth Sackey to collaborate in developing sustainable solutions for managing end-of-life textiles.

According to Hon. Elizabeth Sackey, the Mayor of Accra, who also welcomed the delegation, the Assembly has signed an MOU with international stakeholders to address the improper disposal of waste, particularly textiles, in Accra.

She mentioned that the problem had been a burden on the city, with local chiefs expressing concerns adding that proper waste management could provide economic benefits if handled effectively.
