Ghana’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match versus Sudan will take place at the Accra Sports Stadium, according to confirmation from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Following early worries that Ghana could have to play the match outside of the country, which would have been unprecedented, the 40,000-capacity stadium has been approved.
Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, which had been the site of Ghana’s recent home games, was declared unsuitable by CAF. With other sites unavailability, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) was directed to look into alternatives overseas.
Ivory Coast was given some thought, and rumors have it that Togo turned down a bid to host the game. Nevertheless, after examining inspection reports and a great deal of work by the National Sports Authority (NSA) to prepare the Accra Sports Stadium, CAF authorized the location.
CAF’s letter to GFA General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo read: “We are pleased to inform you that the Accra Sports Stadium has been approved to host the AFCON Qualifiers for Morocco 2025. Specifically, it will host the Group F – Matchday 3 encounter between Ghana and Sudan, scheduled for October 11, 2024.”
