Sudan’s head coach, Kwesi Appiah has described Ghana’s defeat to his team in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers as “unfortunate.”
Kwesi Appiah led Sudan to a 2-0 win against the Black Stars on Tuesday at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya, with goals from Ahmed Hamed Mahmoud and Mohamed Abdelrahman in the second half.
After the match, Appiah, who has previously coached the Ghanaian national team, expressed sympathy for his country but recognized the harsh reality of competition.
“It’s unfortunate for Ghana. Ghana has a good team, but it’s unfortunate that only one of us can go through. I am happy we’ve been able to put a smile on Sudanese faces,” he remarked.
The defeat leaves Ghana in a difficult situation, currently sitting third in Group F with just two points from four matches, and facing the risk of missing out on AFCON qualification for the first time since 2004.
On the other hand, Sudan’s victory improves their chances of qualifying to the tournament, bringing their points tally to 7 and needing just a point from their remaining two games to qualify.
