Former President John Dramani Mahama has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of not only neglecting Ghana’s railway system but also engaging in the theft of railway lines.
Speaking at Teacher Mante in the Ayensuano Constituency, Mahama criticized the NPP for allowing the once-active Accra-Nsawam rail service to collapse and reportedly removing and selling off the country’s rail infrastructure.
“I just returned from Nsawam-Adoagyiri, and it is clear that under the NPP’s government, the railway system has completely collapsed,” Mahama said, highlighting the once-thriving Accra-Nsawam rail service that operated during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
According to Mahama, the railway service, which was a vital transportation link for Ghanaians, has been abandoned under the current government.
Mahama went on to accuse the NPP of dismantling critical infrastructure for personal gain.
“They have started removing and selling the railway lines. This is a clear example of how the NPP has used power to enrich themselves at the expense of the country,” Mahama stated.
He pointed out that many of the promises made by the NPP—such as “One Village, One Dam” and “One Million Dollars, One Constituency”—were never fulfilled, and were merely tactics used to win the 2016 election.
“The NPP has caused a lot of destruction, and it’s time for that to end,” Mahama added, calling on Ghanaians to vote out the ruling party in the upcoming elections.
He stressed the importance of protecting what remains of Ghana’s infrastructure and ensuring the country moves towards development with responsible leadership.
“We need a government that works for the people, not one that seeks power only for its own benefit,” he concluded.
