The Director of Public Affairs at the West African Examination Council (WAEC), John Kapi, has pleaded with the government to make funds readily available to prevent delays in the commencement of its exams.
During an appearance on Adwene Pa on Original TV, John Kapi highlighted the reasons for the organization’s appeal to the government for the release of funds to facilitate this year’s WASSCE exams.
He also disclosed how the WAEC budget committee has been working diligently to address these financial difficulties.
He added that key stakeholders involved in the process include finance representatives from universities, the National Association of Teachers (NAT), Committee Heads of Private Schools (CHOPSS), and the Ghana Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Director of Finance at WAEC and the Public Affairs team, all collaborating to discuss parameters such as exchange rate, inflation, and cost of materials locally to ensure smooth execution of West Africa Examination Council activities.
John Kapi further revealed that WAEC has encountered difficulties funding important examinations, such as the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), and that the financial difficulties led the council to publicly seek government support.
He said the government has stepped in and provided funds to help manage the situation. He also appreciated the intervention, describing it as vital to ensuring the successful conduct of exams.
He mentioned that the West Africa Examination Council will continue to stress the importance of financial support to maintain the quality and efficiency of its operations.
Furthermore, he stated that consistent funding would help avoid delays in examinations, ensuring confidence in Ghana’s education system.
