2024 polls: Voting underway across several polling stations

Voting has officially begun in Ghana, with voters casting ballots in all 276 constituencies to choose a president and members of parliament.

There are 40,647 major polling places across the country for the highly anticipated election, which is a pillar of Ghanaian democracy.

As millions of Ghanaians exercise their right to vote, the mood is teeming with resolve and optimism as voting places open at 7 a.m.

In addition to the overwhelming number of polling places, this year’s general election is noteworthy for the 328 special voting stations that were set aside for the purpose on Monday, December 2.

To ensure their voices are heard and to ensure smooth operations on election day, the Special Voting exercise was designed for election officials, media, and security personnel who will be on duty on the main voting day.

Twelve presidential contenders compete for the chance to govern Ghana for the next four years, making them the focal point of the election.

Both established politicians and fresh candidates are running for president, and each has a different platform that aims to solve Ghana’s most important problems, such as infrastructure development, job creation, economic growth, and healthcare and education.

In addition to candidates from minor parties and independent candidates, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana’s two major political parties, are represented among the contenders in an attempt to win over the electorate.

Given that voter registration has significantly increased since the last general election in 2020, the stakes are very high.

The Electoral Commission reports that the number of Ghanaian voters has increased to an astounding 18,774,159, a significant increase over the 17,027,941 registered voters in the previous cycle.
