The incumbent Sekondi MP, Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, lost a fiercely contested election to National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Blay Nyameke Armah.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Egyapa Mercer received 11,084 votes, representing 42.94% of the total valid votes, and Blay Nyameke Armah received 14,558 votes, or 56.40%.
Among the 25,813 votes cast, 171 were disqualified.
Egyapa Mercer had previously dominated the 2016 elections, so this represents a significant change in the Sekondi parliamentary seat.
He easily defeated Emmanuel Assifuah of the NDC and candidates from the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Convention People’s Party (CPP) in that election, receiving 16,839 votes, representing 59.47% of the total valid votes.
In addition to reflecting a larger trend of fiercely contested parliamentary races in the 2024 elections, Blay Nyameke Armah’s victory indicates a strong showing for the NDC in the constituency.
