The Dome Kwabenya constituency, which was long thought to be a bastion of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was overturned in a historic victory by National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate Faustina Elikplim Akurugu.
Following a fiercely contested election, the results were revealed late Sunday night. Akurugu received 51,634 votes, narrowly defeating NPP candidate Mike Oquaye Jr., who received 50,477 votes.
The victory of Akurugu is noteworthy because it is the first time the NDC has taken the Dome Kwabenya seat, which has always been a stronghold of the NPP.
The NDC gained historically significant seats from the NPP in addition to Dome Kwabenya, including important constituencies like Adansi Asokwa and Sekondi.
