President Bola Tinubu has congratulated John Dramani Mahama, the president-elect of Ghana, for winning the general elections on December 7.
In a phone conversation with Mr. Mahama, President Tinubu expressed his congratulations and his belief that the former president’s comeback would improve stability in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), of which the Nigerian president is currently Chairman.
The Nigerian leader praised the Ghanaian voters for their peaceful and democratic process in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, the country’s special adviser on information and strategy.
“In a telephone call to Mahama, President Tinubu hoped that Mahama’s ascension to power for the second time would further bring stability to the Economic Community of West African States, of which President Tinubu is the chairman,” the statement said.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president of Ghana and the candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), was also commended by President Tinubu for his respectful acceptance of defeat prior to the official results being declared.
“Bawumia’s stance reinforced Ghana’s democratic ethos,” President Tinubu remarked, acknowledging the NPP flagbearer’s commitment to the country’s political stability.
President Tinubu added that Ghanaians’ faith in Mr. Mahama’s vision and leadership is demonstrated by his victory.
He acknowledged outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo’s important contributions to regional stability and Ghana’s growth and conveyed his gratitude.
President Tinubu emphasized the value of cooperation for the region’s ongoing development and stability by expressing his desire to cooperate with Mr. Mahama’s administration to further unity in West Africa and improve Nigeria-Ghana relations.
