Nothing should prevent you from passing anti-LGBTQ+ bill- Catholic Bishops to Mahama

The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has urged the John Dramani Mahama-led government to reintroduce the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-LGBT bill, as soon as possible to ensure its prompt passage into law.

President Mahama said during a meeting with the Bishops on Tuesday, January 14, that a government-sponsored law would be more successful than the existing Private Member’s bill since it would enable wider national consensus and consultation.

Additionally, the President emphasized the significance of updating school curricula to incorporate cultural and moral instruction, hence strengthening children’s African and Ghanaian values.

The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference President, the Most Reverend Matthew Gyamfi, advised the government to pass the measure without delay.

“What we want is that it is made into a law. That does not mean that it cannot be taught in the schools if it is made into a law. Many of our laws are taught in schools through civic education and other things.

“So the fact that it should be taught does not rule out the fact that it should be made into a law. Ghanaians are overwhelmingly in favour of it so we don’t want the use of any technical words to demean what Ghanaians want.”
