Bribery allegation: ‘I’m sorry’ – Barker-Vormawor apologies to Appointments Committee

Bribery allegation: Barker-Vormawor’s statement wasn’t directed at Appointment Committee – Lawyer clarifies

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a social media activist, apologized to the Appointments Committee of Parliament, emphasizing that his previous comments regarding suspected bribery were not intended to disparage its members.

Barker-Vormawor, who had earlier asserted that certain committee members had demanded bribes from ministerial nominees, clarified that his remarks were not meant to directly blame the committee but rather to draw attention to more general issues regarding corruption and transparency.

This clarification was reaffirmed by his attorney, Nana Ato Dadzie, who said that the activist’s post was an act of whistleblowing and not an assault on the committee’s integrity. Barker-Vormawor was called upon by the committee to substantiate his claims, and he complied.

Speaking on Wednesday, January 29, before the Accra Appointments Committee, Barker-Vormawor said:

“I am saying here clearly that my post was not intended to disparage members of the committee, and I have not intended to say that members of this committee have received or demanded bribes from various individuals. At no point was my statement intended to communicate the same, and for those reasons, I apologize.”

He went on to say the following to clarify why he hadn’t removed the post sooner:

“The reason why I have left the post on was because I saw that the words had been twisted, and it became imperative for me to maintain the post in its original form so that, if questioned on it, reference could be made for verification.”
