Freemasonry is founded on Christian principles; it is not occultism-Afenyo-Markin replies critics

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader, has vehemently denied allegations that Freemasonry is an occult organization, maintaining that the fraternity has a strong foundation in Christian doctrine and values.

Afenyo-Markin defended Freemasonry on Sunday, February 2, on JoyNews’, in response to increased public scrutiny of the organization after he raised doubts about George Opare Addo’s membership during a vetting session. On social media, the debate quickly gained traction, with some people characterizing Freemasonry as a cult-like and secretive organization.

Afenyo-Markin, however, denied these claims, asserting that the central tenet of Masonic doctrine is Christianity.

“So, I’m telling you that this Rose Choir, Perfection Stage, the highest level of Masonry, is all about the New Testament and Christ, the teachings of Christ. It is talking about the sacrifices Christ made. And it is therefore reprehensible for anybody to say that Freemasonry is an occultic society,” he explained.

His comments coincide with a resurgence of discussion regarding Freemasonry’s compatibility with Christianity. Recently, the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra reiterated its long-standing stance that Catholics cannot join Masonic organizations without going against Church teaching.

The Church unequivocally declared in a statement on January 27 signed by Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie,”“You cannot be a true Catholic and a Freemason at the same time.
