Four Members of Parliament (MPs) were suspended following a confrontation during the vetting session on Thursday, January 30, 2025, but Speaker of the House of Parliament Alban Bagbin has lifted the suspension.
As a result of the altercation between the majority and minority MPs, tensions in Parliament increased. After the four MPs were suspended, the dispute peaked, leading to a discussion on January 31, 2025, about whether the vetting should continue.
Only the Majority remained to continue screening nominees after the suspension, including MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who had already been questioned for several hours by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. The Minority MPs left after the suspension.
Following an investigation into the incident, the suspension was lifted, and MPs are now anticipated to return to their regular parliamentary responsibilities. The action aims to bring Parliament back to order after the disturbances.
Alban Bagbin said, “So I have lifted the suspension order. I do so instantly and takes effect immediately. The affected Hon. Members are permitted now to enter the precincts of the house. I must say they actually complied with the orders.”
