The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has scheduled the party’s parliamentary primary for the Akuapem South Constituency for March 2.
A statement issued by the party’s regional secretary, Tony Osei Adjei, on behalf of the NPP top hierarchy on Thursday, February 22, 2024, urged all constituency executives to make the required arrangements and inform all parties involved of the revised date.
It also urged all candidates to ensure they are suitably ready for the approaching elections.
This follows the decision of the National Executive Committee and National Council to include the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Frank Aidoo in the race after the current Member of Parliament, Osei Bonsu Amoah, pulled out of the contest.
The postponement of the Akuapem South primary was officially declared by the NPP on Thursday, January 25, 2024.
It was triggered by petitions and recommendations from both the constituency and regional executive committees.
The postponement was to ensure thorough consultations and address concerns following the withdrawal of Osei Bonsu Amoah, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Akuapem South Constituency.
According to Mr. Amoah, personal and national interests influenced his withdrawal.
However, contrary to his claims , reports suggest that Mr. Amoah filed his nomination to potentially disqualify Frank Aidoo, who had filed with the condition that if Mr. Amoah stepped down, he should be included in the contest.
Despite denying claims of supporting his former aide Eric Yeboah Apeadu, Mr. Amoah eventually withdrew from the race, fulfilling his commitment.
Party delegates and some traditional leaders strongly advocated for the inclusion of the disqualified MCE in the contest, stressing the need for a comprehensive decision-making process.
