The Ghana Police Service is introducing a specialized training program tailored to address the unique security challenges associated with football matches.
This initiative aims to equip police officers with the necessary skills to effectively manage and respond to potential security threats, ensuring a safer environment for spectators, players, and officials.
This comes after a recent tragic incident that resulted in the death of Francis Frimpong, a supporter of Asante Kotoko, during a match against Nsoatreman FC on February 2, 2025.
Speaking on Original Sports on Original FM/TV, the Communications Director for the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante-Twum told Gideon Okyere Anim, popularly known as Gattuso that the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has assured the public that those responsible for the crime will be apprehended and brought to book.
He disclosed that the assurance came during a meeting at the police headquarters, which included the police board, commissioners, and the GFA.
The meeting aimed to address security implications and find solutions to protect football players and supporters.
Some fans have expressed concerns about the behavior of police officers assigned to stadiums, citing instances where officers have abandoned their duties to watch matches.
According to Henry Asante-Twum, the IGP has proposed setting up a special football police training program to ensure that police officers are trained to handle sports related activities in stadiums.
This initiative is expected to improve security and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The unfortunate incident happened during the Matchday 19 game between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko at the Nana Kronmansah Park on February 2, 2025, which ended with the home side winning 1-0.
