A group of land guards, backed by individuals thought to be from the military, broke into a property at Trassco East Legon early on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at midnight. They destroyed 40 shops and an eight-bedroom building that belonged to Nana Adjiri Aggrey, the Mawrehene of Akwiapem.
The property was bought in 2000 and is said to have been demolished under the guise of a court order following a dispute that was resolved in 2023.
The people who carried out the demolition, according to Nana Adjiri Aggrey, stated they were following court orders after triumphing in a legal struggle against the late BB Boakye, who passed away in 2010.
Given Nana Adjiri Aggrey’s lack of knowledge regarding any active court action concerning his property, this raises serious questions regarding the legitimacy of their claims and the legal procedure at play.
Nana Adjiri Aggrey voiced his dissatisfaction and questioned whether Ghana still adheres to the law.
He emphasized the dubious character of the operation by bringing up the fact that the participants arrived in a military car devoid of license plates.
Six persons were taken into custody by the police after they were called, and the others left. Joyce Baffo Bonney was the seller of the property, and there are no documented ownership problems.
Police were contacted by Nana Adjiri Aggrey regarding the incident, and she also filed a petition, which is presently being looked into. The incident was also related by the Mawrehene’s wife, Victoria Davies.
She said that she stopped the destruction when she noticed the excavators working and waited for the police to show up so they could make the arrests.
She mentioned that the demolition crew said they were carrying out an operation at the request of a man named Dawson, who has supposedly been involved in previous operations nearby.
The authorities are still looking into this demolition in an effort to find the real reason behind it and make sure that justice is done.
