The Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act 2024, a groundbreaking piece of legislation intended to improve the regulation of Ghana’s commercial shipping industry and fortify the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA), was signed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
In the GSA’s 50th anniversary year, this legislation, which was approved by Parliament on July 29, 2024, was formally signed into law on Friday, October 18.
The Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act 2024 greatly expands the GSA’s regulatory authority, giving it the ability to regulate land, air, and sea transportation.
Ghana’s shipping and logistics industry will be in a position to meet international standards thanks to the Act’s provisions, which are anticipated to promote a fair, effective, and competitive shipping environment.
The GSA hopes to increase pricing transparency and service delivery equity with this bolstered regulatory mandate, making Ghana a more desirable location for international trade.
Originally founded as the Ghana Shippers’ Council in 1974, the GSA changed its name in 1998 to more accurately represent its expanded regulatory duties.
In order to establish the framework for a competitive and sustainable commercial shipping industry in Ghana, the GSA has supported policies that encourage a balanced trade environment over the years.
