Alban Bagbin elected Speaker of 9th Parliament

Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has been elected as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament of Ghana.

His nomination was presented by the Majority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, on the floor of Parliament on January 7, 2025.

The motion was seconded by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin, who expressed concerns about President-elect John Mahama’s nomination of Bagbin, citing potential overreach of executive powers.

Since the Minority caucus didn’t present a candidate for the speaker role, Alban Bagbin was declared duly elected by the clerk of Parliament.

“Thereby there is no other nomination. I declare Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as duly elected,” the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror declared.

Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkonno subsequently swore him in as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament.
