The Twifo Attimorkwa parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party, Ebenezer Obeng Dwamena, who was remanded for engaging in alleged fraud has been released.
He was remanded on July 31, by the Assin Kyekyewere Circuit Court.
A dramatic turn of events unfolded in the Assin Kyekyewere Circuit Court as Judge Sophia Priscilla Yeboah clashed with police prosecutor Superintendent Asare over the handling of the NPP parliamentary candidate’s alleged fraud case.
On July 31, the court remanded Ebenezer Obeng Dwamena and two others for two weeks for allegedly defrauding two businessmen to the tune of GHC 14 million.
However, in a surprise move, the prosecutors requested the judge to discharge the accused persons on Tuesday, August 6, ahead of their scheduled reappearance on August 13.
The reason given was to transfer the case to Accra for further proceedings.
As the judge began to deliver the bail conditions, the prosecutors’ unexpected request caused frustration, leading Judge Yeboah to withdraw from the case.
Obeng Dwamena was subsequently left off the hook while the two accused persons were re-arrested and sent to Accra by the police officers from the police headquarters.
The NPP PC and the two other persons faced charges of conspiracy to defraud by false pretense and false pretenses, contrary to section 131 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act 1960 (Act 29).
Obeng Dwamena and his accomplices, according to Metro TV‘s reliable sources, failed to supply two vehicles to a businessman after receiving an amount of GHC 14 million from him.
Meanwhile, hundreds of enthusiastic NPP supporters in the Twifo Attimorkwa District of the Central Region flooded the streets of Twifo Attimorkwa on Tuesday to celebrate the release of their parliamentary candidate from police custody.
The candidate had been remanded into police custody since July 31 on a fraud allegation.
The joyous supporters, with drums beating and dancing, took to the streets upon hearing the news of his release.
