Bodies of miners killed in Obuasi military clash released to their families

The bodies of nine local miners who were killed in a violent altercation with military officers at the Anglogold Obuasi Gold Mine have been delivered to the Obuasi Government Hospital by their grieving families.

Before the bodies are turned over to the police and then released to the families for the required rites, the hospital authorities are completing the autopsy on them.

Nine fatalities have been confirmed by hospital officials, and eight injured people have been transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Military officers have been heavily stationed at all mine entry and exit points.

However, while Ghana Education Service officials continue to keep an eye on the security situation, both public and private schools in Obuasi are still closed.

A group of about 60 illegal miners broke through the security fence and tried to enter the Deep Decline section of the mine late on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at around 11:00 PM.

When the miners were confronted, they reportedly opened fire on the military personnel while carrying locally made rifles, pump-action guns, knives, axes, gas cylinders, and other weapons.

The soldiers returned fire in self-defense, killing some illegal miners and seriously injuring others. The others quickly left the area.
