Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to intervene and restore order following widespread violence and intimidation by alleged National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters.
Dr. Bawumia expressed deep concern over the “embarrassing state of lawlessness and thuggery” targeting innocent Ghanaians, state institutions, and opposition supporters in a Facebook post.
He condemned incidents of NDC members besieging collation centers with offensive weapons, forcibly declaring NDC parliamentary candidates as winners, and looting state properties.
“The wanton acts of lawlessness and brutality have extended to state institutions, public offices, private homes, and properties, leaving a trail of destruction and fear,” Dr. Bawumia noted.
He reminded President-elect Mahama that “he has won an election; he has not staged a coup d’état” and has a responsibility to protect life and property.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need for Mahama to exhibit statesmanship and rein in his supporters to preserve national peace and unity.
The United Nations has commended Dr. Bawumia for conceding defeat, describing his move as a significant example for African leaders to prioritize peace over actions that create tension.
Dr. Bawumia had earlier congratulated President-elect Mahama, saying the people of Ghana voted for change, and he respects that decision with humility.
His call comes on the heels of reports of violence and intimidation targeting opposition supporters and state institutions.
