Dominic Ayine, a former Deputy Attorney General, has criticized the latest altercations between demonstrators and police, calling them intolerable and ineffective.
His remarks coincide with information that demonstrators fought with police at a Democracy Hub-organized demonstration, which resulted in arrests and incarceration.
During a Saturday, September 28, interview with TV3, Ayine emphasized that although the constitution protects the freedom to demonstrate, violence should never be a part of such events.
He emphasized that while nonviolent protests are a vital component of democracy, the conduct of those demonstrators who turned to violence damage the cause they are supporting.
He claims that this kind of behavior simply serves to exacerbate already existing tensions and sour relations between the public and law enforcement.
“The blocking of traffic is something that is condemnable, the attempt to engage in fisticuffs with police is something that we should condemn. Having said that, I do not think that the activities they engaged in are sufficient reasons you say they should be detained without bail. That is where my concern is,” Ayine said
