‘Dumsor’ is not back – Deputy Energy Minister-designate

Ghana faces imminent 'dumsor' crises as Karpowership threatens shutdown over $370m debt

Richard Gyan-Mensah, the Deputy Minister-Designate for energy and green transition, has denied reports that Ghana is seeing a return of the protracted power outages known as “dumsor.”

In his remarks before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Gyan-Mensah admitted that there had been isolated power outages, but emphasized that these do not constitute a national emergency.

“I want to assure my brother that ‘dumsor’ is not back. We all experienced the period of dumsor, and we know what we went through in terms of even the time when the light goes off. There were schedules and all those things.

“What we see now, I can’t deny the fact that there have been some pockets of lights going off in some areas. But that is not something that can be described as ‘dumsor,’” he stated.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to preventing the return of “dumsor” and promised that the outages will end once maintenance on various power plants was finished.
