The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate, Faustina Akurugu Elikplim, has been formally declared by the Electoral Commission (EC) as the validly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome Kwabenya.
This announcement follows protracted disagreements over the constituency’s election results between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Jean Mensa, the chairperson of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), confirmed the decision during an emergency meeting on Tuesday, December 31. He said that the election process in the Dome Kwabenya Constituency was complete.
“Today, we are pleased to announce that the proceedings and collation at the Dome Kwabenya Constituency have come to a close. It has gone full circle, and we are convinced beyond any shadow of a doubt that the outcome reflects the will of the people as expressed at the polls.
“Ours is not to make anybody president or MP. Ours is to ensure that our outcome and processes guarantee that the people’s choice is upheld,” she affirmed.
After the recall, Mike Oquaye Junior of the NPP garnered 50,669 votes, and Faustina Akurugu Elikplim got 50,967 votes.
This announcement ends the intense competition for the seat and firmly establishes the NDC’s presence in the constituency as Faustina Akurugu Elikplim is ready to take office as an MP.
The scheduled rerun at the constituency’s outstanding polling station has been canceled as a result of the EC’s decision.
