Eight ‘land guards’ prosecuted for attacking police officer at Ofaakor

Eight suspected land guards who attacked and injured a police officer at Jamaica City, a suburb of Ofaakor, are facing prosecution.

The suspects, including Jeff Armah Ametefio, Joshua Asare, Jonathan Paddy, Nii Adotey, Adam Issak, Delali Dartey Andrew, Abdul Faruk Larbi, and Bright Kwabena Ashong, have been arraigned before the Kasoa Ofaakor Circuit Court on ten counts, including stealing, discharging a firearm in a public place, and prohibition of activities of landguards.

The attack occurred on January 9, 2024, when the suspects demanded a digging fee from the police officer, Justice Atitsogbui, who had legally acquired a plot of land in the area.

The suspects fired arms at the police officer’s vehicle, injured him severely, and took away an AK 47 assault rifle.

The Odupong Traditional Council has disassociated itself from the actions of Nai Quabina Atopi Kwashie Abbey II, who is alleged to have sponsored the landguards. The council has called on the police to act, stating that it does not approve of using landguards to solve land disputes.

However, Nai Quabina Atopi insists that his land reclaiming exercise is sanctioned by the Odupong Traditional Council.
