At a recent campaign rally at UPSA in Greater Accra, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate for Dr. Bawumia, created humour by mistakenly calling on voters to support his political opponents, John Mahama and Robert Lamptey.
While trying to rally support for NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, he accidentally said in Twi, “Monto ma Mahama ne Robert Lamptey” which translates “Vote for Mahama and Robert,” this elicited laughter from the crowd.
The slip quickly gained attention online, with NAPO’s spokesperson, Fiifi Boafo, defending him by saying it was a simple mistake that can happen during public speaking.
He clarified that any mention of Mahama was meant to highlight the former president’s controversial record rather than endorse him.
However, critics, including NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, used the gaffe to suggest it reflected the NPP’s difficulties and hinted at a growing preference for Mahama.
Reactions on social media have varied, with many mocking the mistake and questioning the NPP’s campaign strategy.
Despite the criticism, Fiifi Boafo reaffirmed NAPO’s dedication to supporting Bawumia and dismissed claims that the incident was anything more than an innocent error.
A lot of thoughts have been shared on this incident. Probably this is what we need to cool down political tension as Ghana decides on 7 December, 2024.
