A nationwide strike against illegal gold mining is scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 10, and some members of organized labor are becoming increasingly enraged over this choice.
The workers’ groups’ leadership is gathering in a critical meeting to finalize plans to surrender their weapons in an effort to put pressure on the government to act decisively against the threat.
However, a group identifying as the “Concerned Members of Organized Labor” has expressed extreme dissatisfaction with the lack of information and consultation around this choice.
Dr. Solomon Kwarteng Fokuo, a group member, acknowledged the gravity of Ghana’s illicit mining situation while speaking to the media on Monday, October 5. However, he claimed that grassroots members of organized labor were not included in the decision-making process.
“We are all part of organised labour and condemn illegal mining in the strongest terms. However, our major issue lies with how the leadership has rushed to declare this strike without involving us.”
“We have not been involved in any of the activities that they have been doing. We don’t know where they get their energy from and if they had used the same energy in fighting for our welfare, things would have been better. We want to see the document they have presented to the government to address this menace.
The leadership of organized labor is getting ready for the upcoming strike as tensions inside the organization grow. Dr. Fokuo has demanded that the local members and the leadership have a conversation right away.
