Gbetsile residents unhappy over deplorable roads; demand action from govt

Residents of Gbetsile in the Kpone Katamanso Municipality of Greater Accra are voicing their frustration over the dire state of the roads in their community.

They are demanding quick action from both the local assembly and the central government to fix the roads.

Gbetsile community is home to many people who moved from busy cities like Tema, Accra, and Ashaiman. They are mostly civil servants, artisans’ traders, and students.

These people find themselves grappling with a pressing issue, which is the sorry state of their roads. Potholes have become the defining feature of these roads, posing a grave risk to drivers, especially during the rainy season which further compounds the dangers. The outcry from the community seems to be falling on deaf ears.

For students navigating these dangerous roads, the impact is keenly felt even in the form of dust. The deteriorating conditions hamper their ability to commute safely, disrupting their education and adding undue stress to their daily routines. When it rains, the poor road conditions in Gbetsile can worsen significantly. The rainfall can cause the already deplorable roads to become even more hazardous, with potholes filling up with water and creating additional risks for drivers.

Meanwhile, drivers face a constant battle against vehicle damage and tire blowouts, as the uneven surfaces take a toll on both vehicles and wallets.

Passengers, too, endure discomfort and safety concerns, with each journey a gamble on the unpredictable state of the roads.

The uneven surfaces take a toll on both vehicles and wallets of the drivers and owners of the vehicles as they have to constantly visit the shop for repair work.

In all these, a particularly vulnerable group emerges, that is, pregnant women. The incessant jolting and bouncing caused by the uneven surfaces not only give them physical discomfort but also jeopardize their health and the well-being of their unborn children — a reminder of the urgent need to prioritize the safety of all residents, especially those most at risk, in the quest for improved road conditions in Gbetsile.

As the community rallies for change, the call for action grows louder. The health and safety of every individual, from students to pregnant women, hang in the balance, underscoring the urgent need for authorities to address the deplorable state of Gbetsile’s roads without delay.
