The Ghana Football Association has made major changes to the Black Stars’ technical team following a review of their performance in last year’s AFCON qualifiers, where the team failed to qualified to the AFCON.
Winfried Anton Schafer, a seasoned German manager with over 40 years of experience, has been appointed as the Technical Advisor for the Black Stars.
Throughout his career, Schafer has coached national teams such as Cameroon, Thailand, and Jamaica, as well as prominent European clubs including Borussia Monchengladbach, Karlsruher SC, and VFB Stuttgart.
His most notable achievement came in 2002 when he led Cameroon to victory in the African Cup of Nations. Schafer has also had a successful coaching stint in the UAE, working with top clubs like Al Ain, Al-Ahli Dubai, Baniyas, and Al-Khor, with his most recent role being at Al Khor.
In addition to his Technical Advisor role, Schafer will serve as the Football Association’s Director of Football, working closely with Head Coach Otto Addo to build a strong and competitive team.
The team’s support staff has also been strengthened. Desmond Ofei, a highly regarded coach who led Ghana’s U-20 team to winning gold at the 2024 All African games and a place at the 2025 U-20 African Cup will assist Addo as an assistant coach.
Sports psychologist Kris Perquy, with 17 years of experience, will join the team to enhance player mental conditioning, while Gregory De Grauwe, an experienced Belgian video analyst, will oversee the team’s video analysis.
Two new vastly experienced Equipment Officers, in the persons of Issah Amadou (Asante Kotoko) and Abdul Rahman Alhassan (Hearts of Oak), with a combined 53 years of experience will manage the team’s logistics.
