Ghana FA keeps Otto Addo despite 2025 AFCON failure

Dr. Randy Abbey, Chairman of the GFA Executive Council, has stated that the GFA has chosen to keep Otto Addo as head coach in spite of Ghana’s inability to earn a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Black Stars missed the tournament for the first time in 20 years under Addo, who oversaw six games in the AFCON qualifiers without recording a single victory.

Dr. Abbey, the chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, affirmed that the association had no intention of parting ways with Otto Addo.

The goalie coach, Fatau Dauda, and assistant coaches John Paintsil and Joseph Lauman will probably be fired as part of the GFA’s intentions to restructure Addo’s backroom staff.

“We think the GFA has made its decision already,” Abbey stated on Original FM. “The GFA is keeping Otto Addo. Immediately, it’s about the World Cup qualifiers that start in March, and to ensure that the poor trend of results that led to non-qualification for AFCON, we would be able to change course and put the Black Stars back on the winning path.”

Addo will continue his three-year contract with a two-year extension option. Addo took over as coach in early 2024 following Ghana’s dismal 2023 AFCON campaign in Ivory Coast.

The Black Stars will play again in March when they play in 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Chad and Madagascar.
