The government has formally withdrawn all criminal charges against Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Anthony Kwaku Boahen, the party’s Communications Officer.
Dominic Ayine, the Attorney-General, delivered the announcement, bringing the legal processes that had begun in December 2019 to a close.
The two NDC leaders were on trial in connection with a leaked audio tape in which Ofosu Ampofo was allegedly heard conspiring to provoke crimes and cause turmoil in the country to blame the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The recording purportedly detailed plans for kidnappings, arson, and verbal assaults against prominent public leaders, including Prof. Emmanuel Asante, Chairman of the National Peace Council, and Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
Ofosu Ampofo and Boahen were charged with conspiracy to do injury, however the case has been dismissed when the government opted to withdraw from the trial.
The two men had pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to assault a public officer, and Ofosu Ampofo had also been charged with two additional counts of assault against a public officer, which he also denied.
