The Acting Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to increasing water production and deploying modern technology to address Accra’s growing demand.
Speaking during an assessment tour of key water treatment plants in Accra, Mr. Mutawakilu emphasized the need for urgent interventions to resolve operational challenges and enhance water availability in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area. The tour, which included visits to the Weija Water Treatment Plant, the Kpong Water Treatment Plant, and the Accra Desalination Plant, was aimed at identifying critical constraints and implementing immediate solutions.
Accra’s daily water demand currently stands at 220 million gallons, while the city’s production capacity is only 130 million gallons, leaving a deficit of 90 million gallons. Acknowledging this gap, Mr. Mutawakilu stressed the importance of system upgrades, equipment maintenance, and investment in aging infrastructure to improve supply.
Accompanied by a team of Chief Managers and the Acting Deputy Managing Director in charge of operations, he also inspected strategic installations, including the Mile 18 Central Workshop, where major repairs and fabrication of pipes, pumps, and drainage systems take place. He further visited the Central Store, where essential chemicals and materials for water treatment are stocked.
GWL has assured the public that it remains committed to implementing both short-term and long-term measures to enhance operational efficiency and ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply. The findings from the assessment tour will inform key decisions on resource allocation and infrastructure development to bridge the supply gap in Accra.
