Gyampo questions Akufo-Addo’s involvement in police assignments

A Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has raised concerns about President Akufo-Addo’s involvement in assigning specific designations within the Police Service.

He believes the governing New Patriotic Party headed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is interfering with the police administration.

“The credentials of Mr. Yohunu were not known until the plot to remove Dampare was foiled by the people? Why this time? Is it the duty of the Prez to assign specific designations in the Police?” Gyampo posted on Facebook.

His comments come after President Akufo-Addo appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu as the new Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, pursuant to the advice of the Police Council.

“The President’s appointment of COP Yohunu is a well-deserved recognition of his exceptional credentials and dedication to duty,” the Presidency said in a statement.

However, Ransford Gyampo has questioned the president’s role in appointing and assigning security officials.

The university lecturer and social commentator sees such an appointment as an overreach of executive power.

“Must every State institution be manipulable? Oh!!” Ransford Gyampo questioned in the Facebook post.
