Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has warned politicians, particularly Members of Parliament (MPs) from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), against politicizing the judiciary’s decisions.
He emphasized that the executive arm of government cannot interfere with the judiciary’s work and that its rulings, whether favorable or unfavorable, must be respected.
Mr Afenyo-Markin made these remarks in response to comments by Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tamale South, who criticized the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Mr Godfred Yeboah-Dame, for his handling of the ambulance trial case against Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minority Leader.
The Majority Leader expressed delight at the Appeals Court’s decision to acquit and discharge Dr Ato Forson in the ambulance case.
The Court of Appeal on Tuesday, July 30, acquitted and discharged former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and businessman Richard Jakpa, in a case of alleged financial loss to the state.
In a 2-1 majority decision, the court ruled that the trial judge, Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, erred in her decision to call on the accused to open their defense on March 30, 2023.
Justices Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo and Philip Bright Mensah granted the appeal, acquitting and discharging the accused, while Presiding Judge, Justice Poku Acheampong, dissented.
