Hopeson Adorye, a former member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and current member of Alan Kyerematen’s Movement For Change, has reportedly been arrested by police over claims that he detonated dynamites in the Volta Region during the 2016 general elections.
Adorye made the controversial statement during a recent radio interview, alleging that the NPP, then the opposition party, used dynamites to scare away voters from the Volta Region, a stronghold of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He claimed that the intention was to prevent NDC supporters from casting their votes in the 2016 election.
In the 2016 election, the NPP’s Nana Akufo-Addo won the presidency with 5,716,026 votes (53.8% of the total), defeating the incumbent President John Mahama of the NDC, who received 4,713,277 votes (44.4% of the total). In the Volta Region, Mahama won 641,677 votes (64.4% of the regional total), while Akufo-Addo received 323,421 votes (32.5% of the regional total).
Adorye’s claims have sparked outrage and concern among political opponents and citizens, who see it as a serious threat to the country’s democratic process.
